God’s Unspoiled Plan For Worship

When the Israelities are readying to move into the promised land of Canaan, God gives them instructions on establishing purity in the land.  When conquering the cities within the land, they are to completely wipe out any civilizations that are there.

However, in the cities of the nations the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance, do not leave alive anything that breathes.  Completely destroy them—the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites—as the LORD your God has commanded you.  Otherwise, they will teach you to follow all the detestable things they do in worshiping their gods, and you will sin against the LORD your God.”Deuteronomy 20:16-18

God gives the reason for this seemingly extreme measure – leaving in place the people or any of the culture will defile the culture that God is bringing to the land.  God warns that other worship practices, if left in place, will end up spoiling His perfect plan.  It is a natural tendency for people to adopt new ideas and practices in an effort to “improve” on what they know.  In some cases, that is called learning.  In the case of worship, God calls it sin.
