Baal Worship…Is It Alive Today?

We see the Israelites falling away from God, being restored to God, etc. in a long, repetitive cycle.  Just what exactly were they doing during the times when they were not following God?  Were they just slacking off with their quiet times?  Did they skimp on their offerings?  Or was it something worse?

Again the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the LORD. They served the Baals and the Ashtoreths, and the gods of Aram, the gods of Sidon, the gods of Moab, the gods of the Ammonites and the gods of the Philistines. And because the Israelites forsook the LORD and no longer served him, he became angry with them. He sold them into the hands of the Philistines and the Ammonites, who that year shattered and crushed them. For eighteen years they oppressed all the Israelites on the east side of the Jordan in Gilead, the land of the Amorites.  The Ammonites also crossed the Jordan to fight against Judah, Benjamin and Ephraim; Israel was in great distress.  Then the Israelites cried out to the LORD, “We have sinned against you, forsaking our God and serving the Baals.”Judges 10:6-10

What does it mean to worship Baal?  I have read about two distinct practices that took place.  The first is the practice of promiscuous sex in drunken orgies.  The second is the sacrifice of children to the God by placing a baby in the red-hot hands of the idol or depositing the baby inside the red-hot idol through a hole.  One article I read considered the connection of these two events – the orgies would undoubtedly result in the birth of many illegitimate children, many to single mothers.  The care of these children might be expensive.  How to eliminate the problem?  The people could pretend that sacrificing their children to the “god”  Baal was exactly what he wanted.

I find the practice of child sacrifice to be almost unbelievable.  What parent today would participate in such a thing?  And then I recall the practice of abortion in our nation today.  Is abortion our own form of Baal worship?  Does our society see these children as inconvenient – and so we eliminate them, just like the Israelites?

If we want material things so much, that don’t have the time to raise and teach our children of our Messiah and Father in Heaven, when they are with us, we are sacrificing them spiritually. We are putting ‘stuff’ infront of their training they so desperately need and crave and want.

I believe a new disholy trinity has setup shop, that being of baal, moloch and mammon.
I believe this because of the actions of most people who will do anything for celebrity, lifestyle and money.
And they do so because of the hipster atheism that infects all societies.
