As Saul and Samuel meet to talk about naming Saul as the first king of Israel, it’s important to remember what started Saul on this journey – to find three lost donkeys which were owned by his father. He started off with this simple and somewhat unimportant task, but it begins to mushroom into so much more. As he meets with God’s prophet Samuel:
‘After they came down from the high place to the town, Samuel talked with Saul on the roof of his house. They rose about daybreak and Samuel called to Saul on the roof, “Get ready, and I will send you on your way.” When Saul got ready, he and Samuel went outside together. As they were going down to the edge of the town, Samuel said to Saul, “Tell the servant to go on ahead of us”—and the servant did so—“but you stay here awhile, so that I may give you a message from God.” ‘ — 1 Samuel 9:25-27
And that message was that God had selected Saul to be king over His people. So, looking at this from Saul’s perspective, he went out looking for donkeys, but instead he got “a message from God” and was anointed king of Israel! God is truly amazing.
