Marathon Man

The Bible often reveals little nuggets of humor and wisdom to me which I never noticed before.  Here is a great picture:

‘So Elijah said, “Go and tell Ahab, ‘Hitch up your chariot and go down before the rain stops you.’”

‘Meanwhile, the sky grew black with clouds, the wind rose, a heavy rain came on and Ahab rode off to Jezreel.  The power of the LORD came upon Elijah and, tucking his cloak into his belt, he ran ahead of Ahab all the way to Jezreel.’  — 1 Kings 18:44b-46

Does this last verse imply that Elijah was outrunning Ahab’s chariot and horses, on foot –  in plain sight of Ahab and his men?  And could they see Elijah miraculously running ahead of them?  What would have gone through their mind if they had?
