A Second Chance

The Lord can be very demanding.  He was definitely so with Jonah when He asked him to go to Nineveh to preach repentance to the people.  And yet Jonah tried to escape this duty and fled in the other direction.  God could have reacted in many ways at this point.  And yet, He was patient.

‘Then the word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time:  “Go to the great city of Nineveh and proclaim to it the message I give you.”   Jonah obeyed the word of the LORD and went to Nineveh.’ Jonah 3:1-3a

I love that first sentence.  Because it clearly demonstrates that God gives second chances.  He could easily have cast Jonah aside, and gone with a different person for the task.  But, instead, the Lord spent a lot of time with Jonah – breaking him in the belly of a fish for three days, and finally giving him another chance to do the right thing.  That is a character quality of our Lord – he is the God of second chances.
