Keeping Your Word – Even When It Hurts

Lord, who may dwell in your sanctuary? Who may live on your holy hill? He whose walk is blameless and who does what is righteous, who speaks the truth from his heart and has no slander on his tongue, who does his neighbor no wrong and casts no slur on his fellow man, who despises a vile man but honors those who fear the Lord, who keeps his oath even when it hurts?”Psalm 15:1-4
What are the qualifications for a priest-like individual – someone who actually dwells in the sanctuary of the Lord? I was drawn to the last characteristic in this list – someone who keeps his word, even when it hurts to do so! That is a rare quality in a person today, because we want to be seen as wise, and right, and strong. But it takes a special kind of humility and devotedness to be able to stand before others and confess, “I was wrong”.
In a way, all Christians dwell in God’s sanctuary, because our bodies are now the temple of the Lord, which houses the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19). This fact should cause us to have an instinct to keep our promises, no matter the consequences – just as these verses say.
