Peace in All Circumstances

“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”Psalm 23:4
In this most famous of Bible chapters, I found a new nugget of wisdom which I had never contemplated before. While the entire chapter proclaims peace and comfort under God’s blessing, verse four also tells us that we may be forced to walk through hard times along our journey. Being a follower of God is no guarantee against pain and suffering.
Consider the phrase, “the valley of the shadow of death”. I see in this a triple-analogy of hard times – a walk consisting of valleys, shadows, and death. Clearly, David had to walk through some dark events in his life, but he was able to look to the Lord and derive comfort, even in the worst of circumstances. After all, it is not all of us who are pursued by our own offspring wanting to murder us, such as he was. Yet David held on to the comfort of his Lord above all else. We see through his example that a man can be dogged by persecution and trials, and still have peace with the Lord.
