The Lord’s Melting Gaze

“Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall; he lifts his voice, the earth melts. The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.”Psalm 46:6-7

What an apt verse for our world today! We have seen an incredible amount of change at the nation-state level in the last two years – Egypt, Tunisia, Lebanon, Jordan, Syria, Iraq, Bahrain, Sudan, etc. Truly, nations are in an uproar, and it would certainly be uncomfortable to live in one of these places during such upheaval.

We derive a certain amount of security from our daily surroundings. It is hard to look to heaven and to the Lord in every single moment, at least it is for me. There is much which can overwhelm us with the vast array of comforts and distractions in this world, not to mention the possibility of government upheaval, life-changing events and the threat of death that exists in many Arab countries today. Yet, the same God who is praised in the Psalms looks over the nations today. And He wields the ultimate power – indeed, the earth could melt under His gaze. This is comforting and sobering at the same time. We serve a mighty God.
