When The Lord Is Watching

Unless the Lord builds the house, its builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain. In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat—for he grants sleep to those he loves.”Psalm 127:1-2

These verses provide a reminder that NOTHING is worthwhile if it fails to include the Lord. Any endeavor that we may go after, absent the watchfulness of the Lord, is in vain.

In terms of my own life, this could include things like my work career, how I spend my money, and how my time around the house is utilized. Is it possible to live every single moment in fear of the Lord? Is this God's desire for our lives – that every single action and moment be somehow dedicated to Him? That is a tall order, but a worthwhile goal.

As for the final part of this passage – that God grants sleep to those He loves – I can attest to the fact that a clear conscience and an awareness of God in my life is an excellent recipe for sleep. Having experienced both sleepless nights and times of complete restfulness, there is something to be said for knowing that the Lord watches over you.
